Hundreds, maybe thousands, left Baghuz during another pause in the fighting.
According to reports “”Some 40,000 people bearing various nationalities have left the extremists’ diminishing territory in the last three months as the SDF sought to oust the militants from remaining pockets.”
The numbers seem to be extraordinary given the lack of planning for this number of people.
Some have been released by the SDF in a deal with tribes.
Mutlu Civiroglu reports “Another important story was that #SDF forces arrested some 400 ISIS fighters who were planning to flee #Baghouz According to special sources they were planning to leave village & hit the desert before being caught. If this is true, ISIS lost considerable number of fighters!”
On March 4 “About 1,600 people including 300 #ISIS members were evacuated from #Baghuz on 4 March per SOHR”
The Hawl camp has 57,000 people now.
In the last days of February and early March; “About 15,000 people have arrived at the camp in the last week alone as the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) lay siege to the last vestige of Islamic State’s territorial rule at the besieged village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border.”
